The CDN-NDG borough would like to make \u201cthe Triangle,\u201d as it has dubbed the Namur-Jean Talon area, a model for a future residential development on the Hippodrome \u2014 but community groups aren\u2019t as enthusiastic about that plan.<\/p>\n<p>The borough has promised to hold public consultations and gather public support, but groups are afraid the grassroots won\u2019t be allowed to contribute in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can say it\u2019s partly a fear that we would be shut out of the process, but we really feel like that is what\u2019s happening,\u201d says Sheetal Pathak, community organizer at Project Genesis.<\/p>\n<p>Pathak says there\u2019s history of community work and involvement around the area, and as a result, there is a clear understanding of what the community would like to see happen there.<br \/>\n\u201cWe fear that the borough is not looking at the community groups and grassroots organizations that work in the area as partners,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Auchinleck, a community organizer with the Corporation de d\u00e9veloppement communautaire de C\u00f4te-des-Neiges, says lots of people and organizations participated in the public consultations for the Namur-Jean Talon project, but the discussions were held too late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings were already in fact underway when that was happening. So that\u2019s a major difference we\u2019d like to see, is that groups and the public want to be involved from the beginning and not kind of in a sort of small consultation in the end,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Pathak agrees with this assessment. Both organizers praisea report by the Office de consultation publique de Montr\u00e9al on the Triangle development, but criticize the borough for its response to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir report really reflects what came out of that consultation, and\u2026made a series of recommendations for Namur-Jean Talon,\u201d Pathak recalled. \u201cThe borough just kind of said \u2018oh well, that\u2019s not going to happen.
