John Kinloch was an anti-poverty activist and community organizer all of his adult life. He spent many years working with Project Genesis and coordinated Multicaf for over 10 of those years. John also counselled at-risk youth at Kids Help Phone.
John was devoted to social justice in his life and in his work. He was an avid reader and particularly loved history, philosophy and politics, of which he knew so much. He loved playing pick-up baseball and hockey games with his gang on Sundays. John could always be found riding his bike everywhere, even in the winter, and would often stop into local cafes for a coffee and baguette.
John’s biggest love was his son David, who often accompanied John to work when he was little and who enjoyed playing ping pong and reading comic books with the Project Genesis staff. John was a gentle, kind person who never said a bad word about anyone in his entire life and who worked to make the world a more just, open, and equitable place.
John met the world head-on with courage and a smile no matter what happened, even after being diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s Disease in his late 30’s. John was working at Project Genesis when his ever-changing disability made it no longer possible to continue. John was always grateful for the ways in which his family at Project Genesis supported this transition with flexibility and dignity in ways that were true to its mission of advocacy for the most marginalized in our city.
John held onto his independent spirit to the end and will forever be remembered as a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, friend and colleague.
The staff and board of Project Genesis will deeply miss our dear colleague and friend John and extend our sincere condolences to his family, son David, father David, sisters Heather, Jennifer, and Pamela and their families, and longtime friend Shari. May our cherished memories of John be a comfort and may his memory continue to ignite our commitment to social justice for many years to come.
